Week 3 - Keyboarding - Password/Internet Safety
Password/Internet Safety:
La. Performance Indicator # 5. Social, Ethical, and Human Issues
Recognize the importance of information technology and its effect on the workplace and society. Use information, media, and technology in a responsible manner. # 6. Basic Operations and Concepts. Demonstrate the operations of a computer
Passwords are used in a variety of computer applicatons -- logging on to a network, logging on to your web browser, logging into your email account, etc.
A PASSWORD is a 'word' or combination of letters and/or numbers which you have chosen to insure that no one else can get access to your personal accounts. Passwords usually only work in lower case and spaces/characters other than letters, numbers, or underscores are usually not allowed.
I teach the kids that it is VERY important that they not tell a password to ANYONE --except their parents, me, their teacher, or a school administrator. If an unreliable person gets access to a persons password they can then buy, sell, order, open accounts, close accounts, etc. in the password holders name.
On the subject of Internet safety, students have also been taught the importance of not giving out credit card information, their real names, their address, telephone number, social security number, mother's maiden name, playground/social affiliations, school name or location, or
ANY OTHER PERSONAL INFORMATION over the Internet. They have been STRONGLY warned not to EVER ARRANGE TO MEET, IN PERSON, ANYONE WHO THEY HAVE 'MET' over the Internet. This is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, because some children do not realize or really believe (even if warned continuously) that the people they may communicate with using the Internet at home may not be who they say they are. Parents, please stress the gravity of this situation with your child.

How to Enter a Password
ALWAYS enter passwords with LOWER CASE LETTERS.
Using upper case letter/s will prevent you from logging on
to your network or e-mail.
