Week 5 - Keyboarding - Digital Camera

Digital Camera

Uses computerized data instead of film to produce images (photographs) which are downloaded to a computer and can then be printed, transmitted through email, uploaded to a website, used as a desktop background, included in a word processing document, etc., etc.

The school digital camera uses a memory card which can store up to 250 images before having to download the information to a computer. Wouldn't that be nice to have on your next vacation.

Although good quality digital cameras can be quite expensive ($350-$800), you NEVER have to buy film or pay processing fees--so they do eventually pay for themselves. Another bonus is that you don't pay to process bad photos, badly composed pictures, or disappointing shots -- like that fabulous Hawaiian sunset which shows up on film as a tiny bright spot lost in murky clouds. If you're not pleased with a certain shot, you just delete it, and it hasn't cost you a penny.

Using software (included with the digital camera) you can even 'doctor up' your photo; improve the quality--darken, lighten, refocus, enhance colors....,crop it, include captions, change the size, draw mustaches on teachers, etc., etc. And after you get it absolutely perfect you can use special photo printer cartridges and paper which allow you to print out professional quality photographs.

Our 8th grade webmasters have had a ball taking photos around school. Notice on our homepage there's a picture of the statue of The Blessed Mother in front of school. We also publish photos of teachers and school activities on the website. If you visit the lab you'll see that we're in the process putting a group picture of each class on the desktop screens of our computers. Eventually, we hope to use the digital camera so that students can include their oown photos in multimedia presentations.
