Week 11- Word Processing - What is it?

WORD PROCESSING

Word Processing is what used to be called 'typing'. But using a word processing program allows you to manipulate text -- move it, copy it, paste it, insert new or copied text into existing text, copy text from one document to another, and more .

You can buy word processing programs but unless you really want to get fancy, you can use 'WordPad'.  Or you can use EXCELLENT OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE such as what we use in the Writing Lab -- Open Office Text Document.

'WordPad' and 'NotePad' are included in Windows, but 'WordPad' is a more complete word processing program that enables you to change fonts, font size, font color, type in bold face, italic, underline, center, left justify, right justify, and use bullets. In fact 'WordPad' includes just about any feature you would ever need (for straight word processing) except a spellcheck.

To get to 'WordPad' or "NotePad" using Windows go to the 'Start' menu, move up to 'Programs', slide over to 'Accessories', then down to the program.

The very first popular word processing programs (Word Star, Word Perfect , etc.) required training in order to learn them. There were countless commmands and key combinations along with special keyboard grids. They were cumbersome and didn't come close to all the capabilities of current word processing programs.

Current word processing programs are very easy to use and anyone with a little computer experience can usually figure out how to use them without much help. And even the 'Help' is built in -- just go to the 'Help' menu and find what you need to know. And because most are similar to all the others, once you've figured out how to use one word processing program you will probably have no trouble using another.

We now use Microsoft Word and Open Office Text.

Hands On:

Use WordPad and Notepad to create documents.

Note and discuss differences and similarities between the two.

Note and discuss addiional features in Word and Open Office.
