Week 29 - Power Point - Add Images - Peripherals, Simulations

Peripherals

Peripherals are the extras--all the stuff surrounding the 'computer'. When we say we have a 'computer' what we really mean is that
we have a computer system which is composed of 3 components:
1. The processor (the 'box' that contains the mother board, the disk drives, chips, cables, etc.
2. Input devices (the keyboard and mouse
3. An output device (the monitor)

EVERYTHING ELSE IS A PERIPHERAL.
Peripherals which are input devices include digital cameras, scanners, microphones, joysticks, etc.
Common output peripherals include speakers, headsets, and printers.

Simulation Software

Programs which allow us to pretend to accomplish a task are called simultion software. These allow us to test a theory or design
without actually carrying out the task. Governments use simulation software to test the effects of proposed programs. NASA uses
simulations to test new designs and missions. The military uses computer simulations to 'bomb' cities to see the impact that such
a catastrophy would have on the geography and the citizens of that area. The weather bureau uses simulations to model the effects
of hurricanes on the coastline of Louisiana. City planners use simulations to test the effects of developments on the the and industry
of their cities. The list is endless.

Computer simulations, when well designed, allow people to test proposed ideas or future events to 'see' their effects. This allows
for the fixing of problems which were not considered before the simulation.

Activity:
Take apart and examine the inner workings of a computer

MONDAY

TUESDAY

WEDNESDAY

THURSDAY

FRIDAY

OBJECTIVE/TOPIC:

To have hands on experience in the inner components of a computer.

La. Performance Indicator 6. Basic Operations and Concepts  -- Identify and define computer and networking terms (e.g. modem, file server, client station, LAN, Internet/Intranet, data storage device). (6) , Demonstrate the operations of a computer (e.g., touch-keyboarding skills, save, organize and back-up files) and other peripheral devices (scanner, digital and video cameras, VCR, laser disc player) at an intermediate level. (6)

PROCEDURE:

1. Lecture -- See above.

Hands on -- Take apart a PC and put it back together
