Week 20 - Internet - SEARCH vs. FIND vs. URL Address

SEARCH vs. FIND vs. URL Address

When on the Internet there are several ways to get to the information you are looking for. Each works differently to accomplish different tasks:

URL Address:
If you know the address (www.something.com) of the site you want to visit you simply type that address in the white recatangular box which spans the top of your web browser.
Hit the 'Enter' key, let the site load, and you are where you want to go.

Search:
Use a 'Search Engine' such as Yahoo, Alta Vista, Hot Bot, Excite, About.com, Yahooligans, Ask Jeeves, Ask Jeeves for Kids, etc. Then type in a keyword of phrase in the search box. The search engine combs the web for matches and returns a list (sometimes in the thousands) of choices. Click on one of the choices and you are taken to a website which includes your keywords of phrase. There are a number of stratagies for effective searching, but that's another topic we won't go into here.

Find:

Web Browsers have a feature called 'Find'.

You DON'T use 'Find' to find a website--you use a Seach Engine.

You DON'T get to the URL (website) address by using the 'Find' option.

You use 'Find' to find a word or phrase which is presently on the screen. It might be WAY down low or buried in a multitude of text, but the word or phrase is on the page the 'Find' option will find it.

The 'Find' option is a time saving device. It allows you to get to the stuff you need without having to read or skim through a lot of information.

Different web browsers have different ways of accessing the 'Find' feature. With Netscape the 'Find' button appears at the top of the browser window. With Internet Explorer you hit the 'Edit' button and scroll down to 'Find on this page...' Whatever way your browser enables you to 'Find', I highly recomment this feature.
You don't use the 'Find' a website.

--------------------------------------
Hands On:

1. Type
www.google.com into the URL location bar and hit the enter key.
This will bring you to the Google Search Engine.

2. Choose a topic to search.  This can be anything (appropriate) that you find interesting and have questions about.  Type a search query (a question or key words).

3. View the results.  Remember -- these are links to and description of websites, they are NOT 'answers' to your 'questions'.  Choose a likely website.

4. Use the FIND feature in your browser to go directly to what you want to know.  Repeat as needed by going BACK to your search results.

5. Compose a three paragraph report in Open Office Text Document, in your own words (no copy and paste allowed)  to report the results of your research.
